Listing abandoned checkouts

Who can use this feature?

Anyone on your team who can build lists in Engage.

Abandoned checkouts are a type of list in Engage. You can build a list of them, filter it, download it, and connect it to an email marketing tool, in the same way as a list of donations or accounts.

The list has one row for each donor's email address. For what an abandoned checkout is, see Abandoned checkouts.

Creating the list

  1. In Engage, select Data, then Lists, and select Create a List.
  2. Choose Abandoned Checkouts as the type of data.
  3. Give the list a name, then add the fields you want to see and any filters.

The full steps for building a list are in Creating Lists.

A ready-made template, Recent Abandoned Checkouts, gives you a list of the last 72 hours to start from.

EngageA list of abandoned checkouts from the last seven days, showing each one's reference, the donor's email address, the total and when it was abandoned.

The fields

These are the fields you are most likely to use.

FieldWhat it shows
ReferenceThe abandoned checkout's reference
NameThe name the donor typed
EmailThe email address the donor typed
Phone NumberThe phone number the donor typed
TotalThe value of the items in the checkout
CurrencyThe currency the donor was giving in
Items SummaryA description of the items
Items CountThe number of items
Has Regular GivingWhether the checkout held a regular gift
Has Scheduled GivingWhether the checkout held a scheduled gift
StageHow far the donor got: Details, Payment or Payment Failed
Abandoned AtWhen the checkout was abandoned
Checkout IDThe ID of the donor's checkout
Cart IDThe ID of the donor's cart

There is also a field for each of your fund dimensions. Where a checkout held more than one item, these fields describe the item with the highest value.

Total is in the currency the donor was giving in. If you take donations in more than one currency, filter or group by Currency before adding totals up.

Lists worth building

  • For recent abandoned checkouts, filter Abandoned At to the last week.
  • For larger gifts, filter Total above an amount you choose, to find the donors worth a personal message.
  • For donors whose payment did not go through, filter Stage to Payment Failed.
  • For regular gifts, filter on Has Regular Giving. A regular gift left unfinished is worth more over time than a single donation of the same amount.
  • For one appeal, filter a fund dimension field to the value you want.

Sending the list to an email marketing tool

You can connect a list of abandoned checkouts to an email marketing tool such as Mailchimp, or send it to another system through a webhook. An email marketing tool needs the list to have exactly one email field, so add Email and no other email field.

Include Checkout ID and Cart ID as fields if you want them to travel with the list. They are then available to use in links in the emails you send from that tool.

Connecting a list is covered in Connecting a List with External Platforms.

When rows are removed

A row disappears from the list when the donor gives, or 30 days after their checkout was abandoned. The list shows who can be followed up at the moment you look at it, so it cannot tell you how many checkouts were abandoned over a period.
