Presets and QR codes

A preset is a named set of tags for one kind of link, such as your newsletter or your adverts on one platform, so that whoever builds that kind of link fills in only what changes. A QR code is the finished link as an image, for printed material and events.

Presets

A preset saves the tags in the form and their values. Give a value to each tag that stays the same, such as the source and medium of your newsletter, and leave blank the tags that change, such as the campaign. A blank tag is saved as a field to fill in each time. A picked advertising campaign or advert keeps its ID, and the platform keeps only its name. The page URL is not part of a preset.

Presets are shared with everyone in your organisation. Updating or deleting a preset changes it for every user, so agree the change with colleagues first.

Presets sit at the top of the form, above Page URL. Pick a preset… appears once your organisation has at least one preset, and Save as new preset… appears once the form holds a tag.

Applying a preset

  1. Open Pick a preset… and choose the preset. Its tags replace the tags in the form.
  2. Fill in the tags the preset left blank, and copy the link as usual.

As soon as the form differs from the preset, including when you fill in a blank tag, Update preset appears. Leave it alone when you are only building a link. It changes the preset itself, for everyone.

Saving a preset

  1. Add every tag the preset should hold. Give values to the ones that stay the same, and add the others, such as Campaign, but leave them empty.
  2. Select Save as new preset….
  3. Enter a Name and select Save.

Updating or deleting a preset

To change a preset for everyone, apply it, change its tags, select Update preset, and confirm with Yes.

To delete the preset shown in Pick a preset…, select the bin icon beside it and confirm with Delete. A deleted preset cannot be restored.

QR codes

A QR code carries the same tags as the link it was made from, so a donation made after scanning it records the same source, medium and campaign.

  1. Build the link with a source and medium that describe the printed item, such as leaflet and print. The values are covered in Naming and channels.
  2. Select the QR Code icon under the finished link. The code opens with the link written beneath it.
  3. Right-click the code, or Control-click it on a Mac, and choose to save or copy the image. Place it in your design.
  4. Scan the code with a phone before the material is printed, and check that it opens the intended page.

Make a separate link, and so a separate code, for each item, such as a leaflet and a poster, so that the donations from each can be told apart. A long link makes a dense code that is harder to scan, and the Link Builder warns you when a link is long. To keep a link short, leave out the tags you do not need.
